I am ashamed to say I have only just came across one of Pixar’s 2016 shorts.  It’s a 6-minute film called ‘Piper’ that was released alongside ‘Finding Dory’ on June 17, 2016.  How I managed to miss this I have no idea but wow, what a brilliant piece.

The film involves a baby bird (a sandpiper) whose mother is trying to teach how to find food for itself.  Unfortunately an early encounter with the sea and a large wave instills a fear of water that she must overcome.

After a short while she notices hermit crabs safely entering the water & hiding in the sand to protect themselves.  Once she discovers their secret there’s no stopping her!  The fear is gone and she turns out to be naturally skilled at finding food.

‘Piper’ unsurprisingly won Best Animated Short at the Oscars this year.  As with all Pixar releases it’s not just a great story, the visuals are also stunning.  They really do create the benchmark that us CGI artists strive for.
