The development team at Unreal Engine have been working hard to make real-time, realistic looking humans a reality.  They are getting painfully close.  Watch this CGI video of Andy Serkis performing in real-time.

However the performance data doesn't need to be projected onto a human, it could use a CGI character of any style - as shown below:

This opens the possibility for so much more in the future.  Not needing to worry about computer power and render time will mean CGI can be created much faster.  Animators will also have much less to worry about as the majority of the performance can be done directly by the actor themselves.
