Being a 3D animation studio we watch other companies news and software updates closely - we want to stay on top of our game! Disney is known for being quite open with releasing their latest technological developments in hopes to progress the industry forward as a whole. They're a good company to watch.
A few weeks ago our Technical Director was happy to discover that Walt Disney Animation Studios have released some real 3D productions files to the public. They're primarily aimed for rendering software developers to help them benchmark and improve their product. However, as they're completely public anyone with access to 3D software is free to open the files and have a look - for research and learning only of course.
This time Disney have shared it's complete data set for Motunui Island, which was created for its 2016 animated feature film 'Moana'. As you can imagine it's a huge file. If you want to download everything including animation data as well as general assets (such as the ocean, coral, trees etc) then you're looking at around 70GB.
We're a bit busy at the moment but we can't wait to have a look - a sneak peak into a real behind the scenes production file!
