The Oscars weren’t the only awards to be given out in Los Angeles in February.  The ‘New Animation & Cartoon International Film Festival’ took place on February 24th.  It’s a small festival that aims to explore animations in as many different styles as possible.  It hopes to create an international platform to allow indie filmmakers and students an opportunity to showcase their work.

The overall winner this year was ‘Haircut’ by Virginia Mori, grabbing the Best Animated Film award for 2017.  Mori is an Italian artist who has such a beautiful hand-drawn animation style.  It has an innocence about it that really helps to capture the subject of the film.  The story follows a girl coming to terms with the fact that her lovely long plaited hair is going to be chopped off.

As a female I can well and truly sympathise with the fear of getting a haircut, particularly one of such a drastic change!  This short film is doing the rounds at several international film festivals at the moment so if you’re attending any do keep an eye out for it.
